RouteWhiz ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application.
Information We Collect
1. Personal Information
- Account Information: Email address, full name (when you sign up)
- Apple Sign-In: Unique user identifier (no email required if using Apple Sign-In with privacy enabled)
- Google Sign-In: Email address and basic profile information from your Google account
- Profile Information: Username, bio, avatar, phone number (all optional)
- Preferences: Travel preferences such as budget level, pace (relaxed/balanced/intense), and interests
2. Location Data
- Real-time Location: We collect your device location to:
- Display nearby attractions and places
- Create optimized routes based on your current position
- Provide navigation during active routes
- Location Usage: Only when the app is in use (not in background)
- Control: You can disable location permissions in device settings at any time
3. Usage Data
- Routes and Trips: Trip plans, stops, itineraries, custom notes, and route preferences you create
- Search History: Cities and places you've searched for
- Feature Usage: Interactions with app features such as AI tools, route planning, and collaboration
- Analytics: App usage patterns and event data collected via Mixpanel (see Analytics section below)
4. AI Interaction Data
- AI Chat Conversations: Messages you send to AI features, including trip context, day details, and preferences
- AI-Generated Content: Responses generated by AI features based on your input
- Local Storage: AI chat conversation history is stored locally on your device with automatic deletion after 30 days
- Processing: Trip-related data is sent to our AI providers (OpenAI) for processing when you use AI features. This data is used solely to generate responses and is not used for AI model training
5. Collaboration Data
- Invitations: When you invite others to collaborate on trips, we store invitation data and collaborator relationships
- Shared Content: Trip content shared with collaborators is accessible to all invited members
6. Third-Party Data
- Google Maps API: We use Google Maps for place information, directions, and mapping
- Weather Data: Open-Meteo API for weather information and geocoding
- Images: Unsplash API for destination and place photographs
How We Use Your Information
- Route Optimization: Create personalized, time-optimized travel routes
- AI Features: Provide AI-powered trip planning, chat assistance, and personalized recommendations
- Service Improvement: Analyze anonymized usage patterns to enhance app features
- Personalization: Remember your preferences, interests, and search history
- Collaboration: Enable shared trip planning with other users
- Communication: Send important updates about your account or trips
- Premium Features: Manage subscription status and premium content access
AI Features and Consent
In accordance with Apple App Store Guidelines (Section 5.1.1), we require your explicit consent before processing your data through AI features.
- Consent Required: You must opt in to AI features through an in-app consent prompt before use
- What Is Shared: When using AI features, trip context (trip name, city, dates, stops, preferences) is sent to OpenAI for processing
- No Training: Your data is not stored or used for AI model training by our AI providers
- Revocable: You can revoke AI consent at any time through Settings, which disables all AI features
- Conversation Limits: AI chat history is limited to the last 6 messages sent per API request, and locally stored conversations are automatically deleted after 30 days
Data Storage and Security
- Database: Supabase (encrypted PostgreSQL database)
- Location: Data stored in secure cloud infrastructure
- Encryption: All data transmitted using SSL/TLS encryption
- Access Control: Row Level Security (RLS) ensures users only access their own data
- AI Data: AI conversations are processed in real-time and not persistently stored on our servers
Data Retention
- Account Data: Kept until you request account deletion
- AI Chat History: Stored locally on your device for 30 days, then automatically deleted
- Analytics Data: Anonymized after 90 days
- Trip and Route Data: Kept until you delete individual trips or your account
- Collaboration Data: Removed when you leave a collaborative trip or delete your account

We use the following third-party services that may collect or process your data:
Analytics
We use Mixpanel to collect anonymized usage analytics, including:
- Feature usage events (e.g., route creation, AI feature interactions)
- User properties (anonymized user identifier)
- App performance metrics
Analytics data is processed on EU servers. You can opt out of analytics tracking through your device settings.
Your Privacy Rights
You have the right to:
- Access: Request a copy of your personal data
- Correction: Update incorrect or incomplete information
- Deletion: Request deletion of your account and associated data
- AI Consent: Revoke AI data processing consent at any time via Settings
- Opt-Out: Disable location services or analytics tracking
- Data Portability: Export your routes and preferences

Children's Privacy
RouteWhiz is not intended for users under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we discover that a child under 13 has provided us with personal data, we will promptly delete it.
International Data Transfers
Your data may be processed in countries outside your own, including the United States (for AI processing via OpenAI) and the European Union (for analytics via Mixpanel). We ensure appropriate safeguards are in place for all international transfers.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy periodically. Changes will be posted in the app with an updated "Last updated" date. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
