How to Combine Transit and Walking in Your Route

Combining transit and walking lets you cover a whole city in a single day without exhausting yourself -- RouteWhiz's multi-modal routing tells you exactly when to walk and when to hop on the metro.

Step 1: Enable Multi-Modal Routing

In RouteWhiz, open route settings and select Transit + Walking as your travel mode. This tells the optimizer to consider buses, metro lines, trams, and ferries alongside walking paths when calculating the best route between your stops.

Step 2: Add Stops Across the City

With transit in the mix, you are no longer limited to one walkable neighborhood. Add attractions from different parts of the city -- a morning in the historic center, lunch across the river, and an afternoon in the museum district. RouteWhiz will figure out the best way to connect them.

Step 3: Let RouteWhiz Suggest Transit Segments

Tap Optimize Route and the algorithm goes to work. For short distances (under 1 km), it keeps you on foot. For longer gaps, it suggests the fastest transit option. Each segment of the route is labeled as either walking or transit, with estimated times for both.

Step 4: Review Transit Connections

Check the transit segments carefully. RouteWhiz shows which metro line or bus number to take, which stations to board and exit at, estimated wait times, and the walking distance from the station to your next stop. The total transit cost for the day is also calculated.

Step 5: Adjust Your Preferences

Fine-tune the balance between walking and transit. Set a maximum walking distance per segment (e.g., 2 km) and a maximum number of transit transfers (e.g., two per day). If you prefer more walking and less transit, slide the preference toward walking and re-optimize.

Pro tip: Buy a day pass for public transit if your route includes three or more transit segments. RouteWhiz will tell you whether individual tickets or a day pass is more economical based on your planned rides.
