Cycling in Amsterdam: A Survival Guide for Tourists
1. Don't Walk in the Bike Lane
This is the most important rule. Bike lanes are reddish-colored paths marked with a bike symbol. Walking in them is dangerous and will get you yelled at by locals.
2. Renting a Bike
There are rental shops everywhere. Look for "MacBike", "Yellow Bike", or smaller local shops. Most will require a deposit and ID. Opt for a bike with hand brakes if you're not used to back-pedal brakes.
3. Signaling is Key
Before you turn, extend your arm in the direction you're going. This lets the cyclists behind you know your intentions. Also, signal when you're stopping.
4. Watch Out for Tram Tracks
Tram tracks are the perfect size to catch a bike tire. Always cross them at a sharp angle (perpendicularly if possible) to avoid getting stuck and falling.
5. Lock It Up Properly
Bike theft is common. Always use two locks: one through the back wheel and frame, and another to chain the bike to a rack or pole.
